At the December 23rd meeting, the Stanley City Council approved additional work for the Maple Street Reconstruction Project. Jon Strand, an engineer with CBS2, explained that “It’s been many decades since anything has happened there.” He further highlighted the urgency of the project, stating that the forced main was failing at a concerning rate, particularly given the significant volume of water pumped through it daily.
“It’s pretty critical for a large amount of your revenue for the wastewater system as well as the water system,” Strand noted.
The expanded project will include street reconstruction and the replacement of water mains, storm sewer, curb and gutter, and sidewalks along West Maple Street from McKnight to Helgerson Street, Helgerson Street from West Maple Street to Church Street, and Church Street west of Helgerson Street to tie into the Water Treatment Plant Project. Additionally, the watermain will be replaced going south on Church Street.
As part of the project, the forced main will be replaced along Maple Street. Strand added, “Part of that project will include directional drilling underneath the Wolf River. Then that would essentially replace that forced main from the lift station all the way to where it empties into the gravity system.”
Mayor Mike Henke also acknowledged ongoing issues with the forced main, pointing out that it is no longer as large as it was when originally installed. He emphasized that the street infrastructure was last updated over forty years ago, contributing to the current challenges.
Project Timeline
A public hearing has been scheduled for January 20th at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
“At that hearing we’ll have more detail on the cost and the schedule,” Strand said. He mentioned that project bidding is expected to take place in late February 2025, with construction slated for the spring.
The Stanley Council approved the amended agreement for professional services for the Maple Street Reconstruction Project at an increase of $103,742 for a total of $556,206.
