The Stanley Lions held their monthly meeting on Monday, March 14, at Debbie’s on Broadway. Owner, Debbie Haas was given a round of applause and thanked for hosting the Lions as she celebrates her first anniversary of taking over the business Following secretary and treasurer reports, President, Jim Jones called for a review of the District Governors visitation to a joint Boyd and Stanley Lions Meeting held on Wednesday, February 16, at the Boyd Legion Hall. It was noted that Stanley will be hosting the joint visitation next year, with plans to hold the meeting at the Stanley Community Building.
It was announced that the Zone Meeting will be held at Jim Falls on Friday, April 18 with President Jones, Vice -Presidents Dave Jankoski and Dave Zschernitz and Lion Pat Jankoski to attend. The 27-E1 District Convention will be taking place on Saturday, March 26 in Superior. Lions Dave and Pat Jankoski will be attending. This year’s convention returns to an in-person event.
The attendees discussed the Lions Annual Watermelon Festival and all committee chairs have been assigned. The format will remain basically the same. Lion Norm Christianson reported on the donations that have been received from various Lions Clubs following the tornado devastation Stanley experienced. He noted monetary gifts from the Birchwod, Chetek, Tilden and Grand Rapids Lions Clubs. It was also noted that the Grand Rapids Lions donated bicycles and toys to the Stanley Police Department. the plastic collection is going well, with over 300 of the 500 pounds needed already collected.
Under new business, it was announced that the Cadott Lions will be holding their 2nd Annual Golf Fundraiser on Thursday, May 19. It was voted to sponsor a team, if there is interest among Lions members who golf. Lion Adam Smit reported that the Wisconsin Lions Camp at Rosholt is resuming visiting opportunities on Wednesdays from June 8 through August 3. Anyone who would like to visit the camp can contact Lion Adam with their first, second, and third preference of dates.
Lion Jim Jones provided an update on the activity related to the Stanley Community Trail, which will be connecting Chapman Park and Oriole Park. The first hurdle was passed when the Stanley City Council voted in favor of the project by a 5-4 margin. The trail will be 2. 2 miles long and will consist of a 10 foot wide path through areas that are not a street. Much of the initial cost, estimated at $74,000, will be for a crushed rock base with limestone over the top and that will be on a stretch of properties from Jefferson to McKenzie Streets. In kind donations are expected to cover some of the costs. Several donations and pledges have already been secured. After hearing the details, the Stanley Lions voted to donate $5,000 to the project.
As the meeting was nearing its conclusion, it was announced that Lion Dave Zschernitz had volunteered to serve as third vice-president. It was voted to install him as third vice-president. Lion Zschernitz was applauded and thanked for stepping forward to fill this vacancy. Prior to adjournment, it was announced that the annual March Brat Feed at Country Terrace will again be sponsored by the Lions Club. Lion Norm Christianson will order the food and see that it is delivered to the facility, which will again prepare and serve it because of COVID restrictions. It was noted that the next regular Lions Meeting will be held on April 11, at Debbie’s on Broadway.
