The Stanley Sportsman’s Club will hold its annual Sportsman’s Club Booster Banquet Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. at Holy Family Hall/All Saints Parish Hall, located on Third Avenue in Stanley.
Formed in 2006 to get local youth involved in the outdoors as well as to help preserve and maintain area natural resources, the Stanley Sportsman’s Club holds its annual Booster Banquet as a means to raise monies to cover the cost of these goals. Over the years the Club has been a major contributor to and involved in several local projects, including the School Archery Program, National Youth Clay Target League, Boy Scouts, National Honor Society Xmas decorating and many other local organizations. It also provides a free Youth Expo and Hunters Safety Certification event.
The Sportsman’s Club oversees two fishing contests a year to help raise funds for Chapman Park/Lake and Otter Lake improvements. Tickets to the Banquet on Sept. 27th are presold at $100 each included is a meal & refreshments with chances to participate is numerous raffles.

Among the many contributions of the Stanley Sportsman’s Club to the area are the following:
• Several members certified as Hunters Safety Instructors to do Online Field Day Certification. Plans to run spring and fall classes each year.
• Investing $20,000 to improve Park Pavilion by Tennis Court as enclosed unit dedicated to former SSC members
• Helped financially and participated in the development of a School Archery & Trap League Teams along with SSC members volunteering and being Certified Coaches for Trap Team.
• Continued improvements made to the Deer Park with more fencing, food plots and shelters for the deer.
• Donated 25 (10’ to 12’ ft.) trees to replace those lost to disease in the city parks.
• Built and donated a Hay Storage Building to the city for the elk park
• Released 500 Pheasants within the local area Sept. of 2023
• Sponsored a special Outdoor Youth Expo day in 2018 – 2021 - 2025 at Chapman Park making it an annual event. The event included a lunch, event T-shirt and door prizes including two bikes.
• Donated $20,000 to the building fund for the Chapman Lake Community Center
• Financing the paving of the south boat landing on Otter Lake in 2020
• Contracted to supply & service Porta Potty at Otter Lake South & North Boat Landing
• Purchased and installed two heated water fountains for Deer Park in 2019
• Helped add extra fencing to elk park making it easier to herd elk into coral area
• Funded and installed fishing dock on Chapman Lake near old swimming beach
• Will be adding fencing to Deer Park as needed to separate deer as needed.
• Donated funds for the purchase of a padded cover for the top of the outfield fence at Chapman Park Ball Field
• Supplied materials for the replacement of doors on the old Rod & Gun Club building at Chapman Park
• Funded and arranged for the return of Deer back to Chapman Park along with a building for storage
• Funded and with the help of the DNR completed the installation of an aerator system for Chapman Lake
• Purchased and donated a canoe to Boy Scout troop 50 of Stanley.
• Built fish cribs just off the site of the fishing dock on the south landing of Otter Lake.
• Donated backstop and targets for the 4H Archery club.
• Supplied a dumpster during the deer gun season for carcass disposal for the past eight years.
• Installed a handicap accessible floating fishing dock and toilet for the summer months at the Otter Lake south boat Landing
• Purchased and planted 1000 Jumbo Perch in Chapman Lake in 2012.
• Hosted a ”Learn to Turkey Hunt Program” for youth and novice hunters for the past 11 years.
• Held adult and youth Chapman Lake benefit fishing contests for the past 15 years, with proceeds going to the Chapman Lake Fund.
• Sponsored 13 summer fishing contests at Otter Lake.
• Donated profits from 2010 Otter Lake Summer fishing contest towards purchase of 1500 5 to7” fall fingerling walleyes which were stocked in Otter Lake.
• Donated $7500 in 2010 towards the Chapman Lake dredging project which removed an additional 6,000 cubic yards of silt and debris to complete the project.
• Stocked 500 adult bluegills in Chapman Lake fall of 2010.
• Donated funds to the Wisconsin Trappers Association towards purchase of a trailer for transporting their educational equipment and supplies.
• Co-sponsored 19 Hunter Safety courses throughout the past nine years. Club paid course fees 16 years & under
• Donated Scholarships the past 13 years to be awarded to chosen Stanley-Boyd graduating seniors.
• A major sponsor to the Little Hills Annual Youth Day throughout the past ten years where approximately 100 “12-16” year olds participated in 25 rounds of shooting clays, a three bird guided pheasant hunt, and hands on bird cleaning. Lunch and tee shirts were provided to all participants.
• Funded and completed project to upgrade south & north aerator at Otter Lake with new three phase electric motor and frequency drive for a more efficient and economical running system. The updated system has already demonstrated a 20% decrease in energy costs for aerator
• Club has provided approximately 16 pickup loads of food for the local food pantry through their annual Sportsman’s Club banquets food drive.
• Purchased twelve pairs of snowshoes in cooperation with the Stanley-Boyd School District by which students and general public can check out and use for recreational activities.
• Club has planted 500 adult bluegills and 150 largemouth bass that range in the 8” category that were stocked in Chapman Lake in September 2011.
Awards and Recognition
• The Stanley Sportsman’s Club was chosen by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress to be the Outstanding Local Conservation Organization of the Year in 2008 and has been chosen by the Congress to be the recipient for outstanding achievement awards for a local conservation organization in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
