McDonald's portion to remain open, adjacent gas station seeks new operator

The Stanley Travel Stop, located at 600 South Broadway Street, is seeking a new operator after its current operator Mega Consumers Cooperative of Eau Claire, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, allowing it to restructure while retaining decision making power. As to the Travel Stop at Stanley, building owner Dan Acker said the news came as a surprise.

“It’s actually a pretty good store,” Acker said of the location at 600 South Broadway leased by Mega before the chain decided otherwise. Mega Co-op is offering affected employees at its closed locations work in other company stores, with Stanley one of 13 locations closed by Mega, out of 31 total.

As to the present, Acker said he’s looking for a new operator.

“We’re hoping within 30 days we can have it open and running,” Acker said as the search continues for a new company to lease the South Broadway location. Nothing could be guaranteed as to a timetable on reopening, he said. So how does Mega’s action to close its Stanley location affect the McDonald’s restaurant side?

“We’ll still be open and running,” McDonald’s franchise representative Tony Conner said of the restaurant portion of the building.

The closing of the gas station side is expected to take place this week, with reopening pending a new operator.
