Time Out for Fishing -What’s Happening?

It’s been an eventful and rewarding two weeks. Between planting my garden and taking a long overdue getaway to do some serious fishing, I found very little time to share my Tracks and Trails articles.

Late May and early June normally offer prime time for pan fishing. Despite traveling north to find a quiet lake with a peaceful setting and experiencing cooler temperatures, I found the bluegill action to be excellent. Evening temperatures dropped to near record lows forcing me to wear my winter jacket. It had comparable makings of fishing in late October or early November.

Crappie action was good to fair. Based on previous experience, I predict crappie fishing conditions will greatly improve with warmer temperatures. Although I was hoping for some bonus walleye action, I had very little success.

Northern Pike action was beginning to surface. My wife experienced some excitement attempting to play out and land a nice sized northern caught on a crappie jig with 4-pound test line. Needless to say, after a 2 minute battle, the northern won!

Locally, I’ve heard reports that Otter Lake has yielded some nice catches of bluegills and crappies. Also a few anglers have reported picking up some walleye action.

Speaking of Otter Lake, keep in mind the Stanley Sportsman’s Club and Foundation are sponsoring their annual Otter Lake Benefit Fishing Contest this coming Saturday, June 11 at 7 a.m. – 12 Noon. $875 will be awarded in fish prizes for fivecategories.
