At the Monday meeting, the Town of Delmar Board voted to pass a resolution to exceed the tax levy limit from the state. Chairman Dave Peterson informed those in attendance that a special meeting will be held on Monday, October 16th at 7:30 PM for the electors to vote on the issue. Treasurer Debbie Haas feels that it is important for the town electors to attend the special meeting. She explains, “With state statutes limiting the levy limit for the township, we don’t have an increase in our taxes to allow us to maintain our township; between roads, plowing roads, buildings, equipment, recycling, etc, prices for everything have gone up drastically. While we get grants for different things and subsidies from the state, it doesn’t allow for the increase in employee wages or the cost of goods increase. We are proposing a levy limit increase to continue managing our township, we are avoiding a need at borrowing money or not having the money we need to pay the bills.” The regular monthly meeting will begin at 8 p.m. after the special meeting.
At the September 18th regular meeting, local residents expressed their concern over missing road signs throughout the township. Chairman Peterson informed them that they were aware of the missing signs and are in the process of getting replacements from the County. According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, there has been an increase in sign theft and replacing a stolen sign costs taxpayers up to $250. Stealing road signs is a misdemeanor and can carry a punishment of up to nine months in jail or a fine of up to $10,000.
The town shop will soon have new doors as the board voted to accept the bid from Central Door Solutions in Marshfield causing them to rise past the other two bids of $16, 694 from Garage Doors Unlimited out of Thorp and $16, 420 from Flambeau Door Co. Central Door Solutions was the highest bidder at $16, 948 but had the earliest installation time of about four weeks which sealed the decision for the council members who wanted the white, LifeMaster doors installed before winter. The current doors won’t always close after they are opened which results in someone having to stand on a ladder to reach the cord at the top manually shutting the doors. With winter weather, this poses a safety issue. The other two bidders had installation dates of late November or middle to late December.
Chairman Peterson discussed the Heart & Liver Transplant Benefit that will be held for Boyd Edson Delmar Fire and EMS member Scott Knez who is currently waiting for heart and lung transplants at UW Madison. Knez has been an EMT for 27 years and a firefighter for 29 years. The benefit will be held on September 30th at 11 am at Lotz Park in Boyd and will include food, a silent auction, basket raffles and a Family Fun Day. Proceeds will be used for medical bills and expenses. Chairman Peterson encourages anyone who is able to attend the fundraiser and show support for Knez.
