The Oriole varsity wrestlers continue to rack up wins.
Competing at Eau Claire Memorial Dec. 5, the girls finished 3rd as a team, while at Barron the boys placed well, Aaron Sturm and Willy Graham placing second in their weight classes.
Orioles head varsity wrestling coach Jake Fitzsimmons shared more after results.
“The girls continue to wrestle well,” he said. “They placed 3rd out of 39 teams at the Eau Claire Memorial Invite including beating division 1 teams like Eau Claire North, Eau Claire Memorial, and Hudson. We had 5 girls place in the top 4. Nevaeh Walters was 3rd while Koraline Pennala 114, Ava Kempf 120, Lillian Fitzl 132, and Sierra Marten 138 all placed 4th. Kelsie Mateski 107 placed 8th and Ziva Blair 126 was 15th. We didn’t get home until late on Friday and the girls still competed well at Barron on Saturday. They brought home a runner up trophy as a team! Koraline Pennala took 1st at 114. Taking 2nd were Ava Kempf 120, Lillian Fitzl 132, and Nevaeh Walters 145.
“I keep saying it, but our girls just continue to impress and are wrestling very well! Koraline is really wrestling well for us. Ava Kempf has been an outstanding addition to the team. She is extremely coachable and continuing to improve each time out. Nevaeh Walters has started the year off very strong. She has really improved her positioning and has taken that next step.
“On the boys side we were led by Aaron Sturm 165 and Willy Graham 215 who both took 2nd. They both beat sectional qualifying wrestlers on their way to the finals. Both have some small adjustments to make, but are continuing to wrestle well. Carter Weltzin placed 3rd at 285 and made the podium. Carter has been working hard in practice and is very coachable. Ryan Bowe was in a tough bracket, but wrestled well. Ryan has made a lot of improvement since last year and excited to see how he finishes the year. Our boys team isn’t at full strength yet. We should be back to full strength in January.”
The Orioles compete in the Pre-Holiday Scramble at Stanley-Boyd on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
