A crash Wednesday July 5 near Boyd has left two vehicles towed with EMS ground transport for a driver and passenger. Responders included the Boyd Fire and EMS, Stanley Police, and the Sheriff’s Department. The eastbound lanes of Highway 29 were reduced to a single lane of traffic as law enforcement and EMS addressed the accident.
According to the crash report, a silver SUV driven Joseph Chittum, 36, was negotiating a right curve in the east bound lanes near the Boyd exit at 2:06 p.m. when it failed to keep in its designated lane, crossing the center line and resulting in collision with a blue 2014 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Rita Derks, 80. Derks was determined to have made no contributing action to the crash.
The silver SUV took the median while the Chrysler Town and Country ran off the road to the right.
Both the Town and Country driver along with her passenger, Julia Derks, 41, were transported by EMS Ground to Mayo Clinic with suspected minor injury. Airbags deployed for both driver and passenger in the Town and Country., while the SUV deployed front airbags. Seatbelts were worn by all.
Chittum ultimately received a citation for failure to keep vehicle under control.
