City Council approves East 1st Avenue auto repair shop

At the meeting on May 20, the plan commission for the city of Stanley recommended their approval for the conditional use permit for Justin and Kristen Pope, owners of KJ Garage, LLC., to operate an automotive repair shop with no small engines or diesels at 219 E. 1st Avenue, the original plat of Stanley Lots 3 and 4 Blk 2.
When asked by a neighbor attending the public hearing if they intended to buy the property, Kristen answered that they already had.
Alderperson Mark Fitzsimmons asked if they would consider installing privacy fencing around the perimeter of the outside property.
“It’s a nice gesture towards neighbors,” he commented, adding that it was asked of others as well.
Justin answered that they won’t have anything on the outside of the building except for vehicles but they had planned to install fencing at a later date. “For security purposes in the future for us,” said Kristen.
“What would be stored on that lot?” asked Commission member Dave Jankoski.
“Just customer vehicles if we need too,” Justin answered.
Kristen informed the council that they plan to use the lot next to their building as a parking lot and to purchase gravel for it. “We don’t want to mow it,” she added and mentioned that they would like to have a dealership “eventually in the future, not any time soon.”
Commission member James Ericksen asked, “You understand about the weeds and snow removal and all that type of stuff that has to be taken care of?”
“I mean either way we bought the building, so we have to do it,” answered Justin who told the Commission that they purchased a house in Stanley as well.
When commission members and neighbors remarked that they hoped the area would be cleaned up, Justin described the work they have been completing on the building so far and the numerous trips in the incinerator. “We’re trying. Everything takes time,” Kristin remarked.
At the council meeting later that evening, the Stanley Council approved the conditional use permit as recommended by the plan commission.
