In the world of high school athletics, dedication and perseverance often lead to remarkable achievements, and for this week’s Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week junior Beckitt Kohls, this season has been a testament to those values. A significant moment of pride for Kohls came when he placed 2nd at the conference meet and earned an honorable mention for All Conference in high jump.
Reflecting on his journey, Kohls shared, “A moment I am proud of is definitely placing 2nd at conference and getting all-conference honorable mention in high jump.” This achievement is particularly impressive considering the hurdles he has faced as a latecomer to the sport.
Kohls faced a unique challenge when he decided to return to track after a two-year hiatus. “My biggest challenge in track is that I joined late in my high school career and now I am behind other athletes my age. To overcome that, I’ve just pushed myself and I always try to do what I can to improve,” he said.
As Kohls looks ahead to the offseason and the next competitive year, he has set ambitious goals for himself. “My goals are to keep improving and do better than last year. But my biggest goal is to make it to sectionals next year for my two main events,” he explained.
Beyond personal achievements, Kohls treasures the camaraderie of the track team. “My favorite thing about being on the track team is the positivity and the bond between all of us, including the coaches. This kind of bond is what helps us find success,” he shared.
Kohls began his track journey in 7th grade and competed until the beginning of his freshman year before stepping away. It was encouragement from an unexpected source that reignited his passion for track: “Someone that pushed me was my older brother who had done track while he was in high school.” This familial support has played a significant role in his return and continued success.
The support system around Kohls is a vital component of his journey. “My biggest supports are definitely between my family, coaches, and teammates in all their own ways. These supports are the biggest part of my success,” he noted. These relationships have not only encouraged him but have also contributed to his growing confidence and skill in track and field.
Coach Braxton Thompson recognizes the value Kohls brings to the team. He shared that after facing injuries that had sidelined him in past seasons, this year has been a significant turnaround as Kohls has participated in every meet and consistently scored points. Thompson commended Kohls for his work ethic, noting he does everything asked of him without complaint, and his consistent dedication and effort have a tremendous impact on the overall team score.
Beckitt Kohls exemplifies the spirit of an athlete who embraces challenges with resilience and seeks growth both on and off the track. As he prepares for the next season, the Stanley Boyd community looks forward to watching this talented athlete continue to soar. Congratulations, Beckitt!
