Meeting the Ladysmith team at Stanley-Boyd, the Oriole girls varsity narrowed the point gap, fighting to keep pace before Ladysmith rushed ahead in the final half to take the game.

The Orioles this season have played against Flambeau (66-41 Orioles), Barron (72-15 Bears), and Ladysmith (46-31 Lumberjills), making their overall season record 1-2 so far.

Coming out strong at Flambeau Nov. 14, the Orioles took the lead early, with 23 points in the first half and 43 in the second, while Flambeau made 16 points in the first and 25 in the second. The Orioles were strong with points inside the paint, also making a combined six three pointers from the outside for 18 total points from free throws.

Flambeau was much less successful in its point spread, with zero of eight attempted points from the outside, and mixed success inside. Orioles Head Coach Ryan Wundrow had the following to say on the game at Flambeau.

“Flambeau game was a great start to our season and it was nice that the girls could see some fruits of our labor,” he said. “We were able to get running in the second half and score some easy buckets that let us pull away. “

Next facing off against Barron at home, the Orioles chalked up a loss, unable to match the Golden Bears early lead after rebound.

Meeting Ladysmith at home just before Thanksgiving on Tuesday Nov. 21, meanwhile, the Orioles kept pace, quickly countering each point made before a Ladysmith rush in the latter part of the game put them ahead to clinch the win. Orioles coach Wundrow had the following to say.

“Ladysmith was a very evenly matched game, despite the final score, it was quite close. We didn’t take care of the ball well versus their full court pressure which led to a lot of easy buckets for them. We also got into a little foul trouble. All the things we did are correctable and we will have to work hard to erase more of our own mistakes.”

The Orioles next play St. Croix Central on Thursday Nov. 30 at Stanley-Boyd. Game start is 7:15 p.m.
