Little League starts at Boyd

Boyd Softball League’s first game of the 2023 season had a windy start on June 1st for the Boyd Little League Braves and Cardinals players. Boyd Softball League has been a community tradition at Lotz Park for over fifty years and is sure to continue for many more. Little League President, Brad Benson has coached for 24 years, and together with his wife, Chris, has been heading up the league for the past three years. For them, it’s all about family and fun as Brad coaches their son, Brantley along with the Pirates, and their other three children are involved in the league as well. Chris says, “We believe that families want their kids involved in Boyd Little League because everybody gets to play. It’s different age groups, it’s all in one spot, you don’t have to travel, and it’s in the same day all summer. Everybody treats everybody with respect like family and friends.” She adds, “It’s all like one big family.”

And with T-Ball for ages 4K to 3rd Grade, Little League for 3rd Grade through 8th Grade and Junior League for 9th grade and up, there’s a place for everyone. Games are held every Thursday night in June and July at Lotz Park ending with a tournament the first weekend in August. Boyd Softball League also offers delicious concessions at every game where parents of the players step in to help serve.

“We feel we like to keep it going so other families can get the chance to experience what we got to and hopefully meet new families and make new friends and somebody will see all the excitement in the kid’s faces and want to keep it going,” says Chris Benson on why their family continues to support the league. “Nobody is afraid to help us,” Chris remarks on community members chipping in to make the League a success through time, donations, and upgrades to the park and fields.

This year the Boyd Softball League is hosting a fundraiser to raise money for new park equipment in Lotz Park and improvements for the softball field. Players are selling cases of brats from Stockyard with each case costing $60 and $25 of each case going back to the Boyd Softball League. Giving back to the park is important to the Bensons as any money that is raised Chris says, “We put it back into the park.”

A new t-ball field was recently installed in 2022 and enough money was raised to purchase two sets of bleachers for the field in time for this year’s summer league. This year Boyd Softball League is hosting Family Night on June 29th with a free bouncy house, dunk tank, concessions available for purchase and fireworks at dusk.
