Crossing guards soon?

District looking for volunteers to slow traffic down on School Street

Crossing guards could soon be coming to Stanley-Boyd Schools, on the west side.
“We’re looking at trying to find some adult crossing guards to monitor School Street out next to the bus garage or bike racks,” superintendent Jeff Koenig told the board. “That’s become a really —that intersection has gotten worse and worse through time.”
Looking to adults and older students as potentially commanding more respect from drivers, the district is looking for volunteers, with cost for uniforms going to the school district.
“There will be a little bit of a cost to the school district because of just getting them some proper signage and attire,” Koenig said.
School board member Lanse Carlson questioned Koenig on programs to assist the district.
“Are there any programs for that anymore?” He asked. “I mean, I can remember when I was in grade school we had safety guards that had a white thing that went across like this and wrapped around,” he said with a diagonal motion from right to left. “And they had a badge—and they were just kids. They were the school safety guard.”
“There are schools that have kids that do it,” Koenig said. “That’s something we can look at as we progress. I’m hoping to get some adults just because people will hopefully be more respectful and responsive with adults there.”
State law regarding school crosswalks and vehicle owner liability for illegal crossing is covered under 346.46 and 346.465 of state law.
